CAROLINE ROSE
The Art of Forgetting Tour 2023
Designer // Programmer

Caroline Rose brought me aboard to help bring her dream production to life. She had a very distinct vision for what she wanted: a screen between herself and her band, with the performers casting giant shadows behind her, as well as a three-projector setup to project light onto herself and the screens from the front. Additional lights at the performers feet were to light them enough to see them through the screens at certain times, while other times they were to be completely obscured, with only Caroline visible. Additionally, due to budget restraints, this was all supposed to be fully automated and operable without a dedicated lighting operator on tour with the band.
With the budget in mind, we decided to use (5) LED Lekos upstage for backlight, one for each screen panel. With built-in framing shutters we were able to precisely crop their beams to fit within each rectangle, allowing for dynamic lighting chases and color effects without any light spilling over onto the other sections. Preventing the light spill also allowed for super clean and crisp shadows of the band on the screens.
Additionally, we chose to add some LED battens onto the stage to add some punchier eye candy effects and more-visible atmosphere. With both the battens and the leko-lit screens, we were able to create some nice play between both fixtures to make some really compelling looks.

Additional battens were used at the feet of the performers to light them from the front. Lighting them this way allowed for them to be seen through the screen when desired.

We used 3 separate projectors, angled and framed in such a way that they could light each screen panel individually from the front, project video content onto Caroline and the screen behind her, as well as light her with dramatic, spotlight-esque shapes.
Having the projectors overlap allowed for us to incorporate these awesome tri-colored shadows into the production. When each projector was casting a different solid color (red, green, and blue), anyone standing in front of the beams would block one of the colors from each projector, allowing only two of the projectors' colors to mix for each shadow (creating shadows in magenta, yellow, and cyan).

The entire lighting production was prerecorded with midi, programmed along to the band's timecoded music. With the band and sound crew dedicated to setting up and tearing down the lighting each night, this entire production was manageable without an LD on tour with the band.
The final result was a completely unique, affordable, and self-contained design that had larger-than-life moments to capture the strong emotional themes of Caroline Rose's newest album.
This design consisted of:

- (5) Prolights Eclipse-FS
