CAR SEAT HEADREST

This design incorporated many of the ideas Will Toledo, mastermind of Car Seat Headrest, had thrown around over the past few years of working with him, along with some original ideas I had as well.
Will had expressed interest in using LED festoons and mirrors for this production. I decided to have custom festoon sections built, as well as custom LED infinity mirrors. These were placed on truss towers upstage. The end result was some beautiful eye-candy that had the ability to produce a multitude of different looks and effects, and also had some similarities in form to the artwork on the cover of the album.
Between the mirror panels hung hybrid moving fixtures that added aerial effects and gorgeous textures, which shined through the hanging strands of festoons. These lights created a beautiful atmosphere and dynamic effects to fit the many ups-and-downs of a typical Car Seat Headrest performance.

Lifted just off the ground, I chose to incorporate batten fixtures for the upstage wash. Because of their width, I felt that these lights would look best with the size of the design. In addition, they also had 20 individually programmable LED bulbs in each fixture that allow for countless effects. Having them elevated enough to be just above the drum riser was crucial for getting the maximum use out of them. This way they could be used as backlight, eye candy, wash, beams, and blinders all in one light.
Finally, Will wanted to have a custom mask with built-in LED eyes. He commissioned me to design the eyes and have them built to fit within a custom mask he was having made. I had the eyes designed as circular LED panels that are 9 pixels in diameter, which allowed me to program complex patterns and effects within them, giving each song it's own special flavor of lighted eyes.
The end result was a unique, incredibly complex and cohesive lighting production that had hundreds of individual LED's all working together to compliment the band's dynamic performance.
